Have you or others had exposure to quantum tech at Nokia, and how did it impact your career or view of emerging tech?

Boniface K. asked a question to Casey C.

I’m curious how long-term research domains influence career paths at Nokia. I’m also interested in whether the company encourages engagement with frontier technologies, even when practical or commercial use cases are still emerging.

    Hello Boniface K.,

Personally, I haven't been involved in quantum tech research, but there is a team in Nokia - Nokia Bell Labs - specifically the Data & Devices Research Department who's working on this. Check out https://www.nokia.com/quantum/ for more info.

For career paths, especially related to new/emerging technologies, we are highly encouraged to allocate time for our knowledge and career growth - not only in the specific field you mentioned but in other fields and careers too. For example, you can have 1-1 meetings with your manager to discuss your technical career path and get guidance on what skills to develop for that role. Another example is the numerous internal trainings available in our internal library (and yes, sometimes I'm learning photography from our internal learning materials!).

Going back to the topic, yes long-term research opportunities are available, but one thing I'd advise is to be open and fearlessly accept challenges that come your way.

Hope this helps! Any specific areas you're curious about?

    Best regards,

    Casey

    Hi Casey,

Thank you for the response. I also took a look at Nokia’s quantum page and it’s impressive to see the depth and seriousness of the work across networking, security, and research.

To add a bit more context: in many places it’s hard to go beyond the theoretical side of quantum due to resource constraints, so it was genuinely exciting to see how well-resourced and practical Nokia’s work appears. That’s what’s driving my curiosity.

I’m currently outside Nokia, but I’m trying to stay engaged and learn from people closer to the work. If you don’t mind, what’s the best way to keep an eye on relevant opportunities or communities (e.g., public events/talks, Bell Labs updates, or areas/teams to follow especially in Ottawa) related to quantum and adjacent topics like post-quantum security?

No worries if you’re not the right person — any pointers would be appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Boniface

    Hello Boniface,

Great to hear you found Nokia's quantum work impressive!

I would suggest staying connected to Nokia's public channels where they post webinars and events on LinkedIn and other social platforms - not just quantum, but various emerging tech topics. I also share relevant content on my LinkedIn page when I come across it. :)

Hope this helps point you in the right direction!

    Best regards,

    Casey
