Nand P. asked a question to Vilmos M.
Thank you for your question, Nand! I'm happy to share my journey into this field with you.
My path started early - even back in high school, I knew I wanted to work with computers and loved programming. This passion led me to choose Computer Science Engineering for my university studies.
During my time at university, I found myself particularly drawn to software development-related topics. As a result, I chose to specialize in software development rather than other options like networks or telecommunications. This focus on software development continued into my first job after graduation, allowing me to deepen my expertise in this area.
When I joined Nokia, I was initially a bit anxious about my lack of telecommunications knowledge. Even now, after two years here, I am happy if I can recognize some of the 3-letter abbreviations of the 5G core network elements! However, I quickly realized that the general software development and architecture concepts I had learned translated really well between domains. This allowed me to contribute meaningfully right from the start.
Based on my experience, my advice would be not to stress too much about specific fields if you're interested in Nokia's culture and goals. Nokia is a huge company that certainly needs people with specialized telco knowledge (like networks, 3GPP standards, 4G/5G network elements, etc.), but it also requires expertise in many other areas. As long as you're open to learning new things, you'll find your place here.
I hope this gives you some insight into my journey and encourages you in your own career path!
