Data Science is a big area but there are specific competencies that will create a foundation for success. An overall interest / passion for data and analytics is a good start. Specific knowledge areas - Statistics, Data Visualization, AI/ML/DL and statistical programming. I would take an overview class just to get a broad view and from there you can target on areas of concentration. There is a lot of free content out there. Google has a free crash course in machine learning just FYI.

I am on a niche of Data Science called Process Mining, but based on that, I would say that in Data Science and Analytics, the skills I value most are a mix of technical expertise, analytical thinking, and clear communication. Technically, I rely on strong data processing skills (SQL, Python, Spark), solid statistical understanding, and the ability to build and validate machine learning models. Analytically, I focus on breaking down complex problems, identifying the right metrics, and interpreting patterns in a meaningful way. And just as importantly, I value the ability to communicate insights clearly and collaborate with stakeholders, so data-driven decisions can actually happen.
