To become an SoC engineer you would need to have good knowledge of Digital Design, mainly RTL coding. Also, you can focus on verification where it is important to understand UVM methodology for verifying integrated circuits. In general, coding and scripting skills are absolutely required for working in this area. SW skills are also important depending on which project and which level you would be required to work on.
