I often do competitive programming problems to keep my math and programming skills sharp. I imagine Nokia is facing much larger engineering problems, so I'm wondering where problem solving comes into play in Nokia's engineering teams.
Hello, and thank you for your question.
In general, I believe that problem-solving is a good and necessary skill in all of today's job opportunities. In IT I think most problems start when an error condition occurs and the reason for it is unknown. Therefore, the ability to know how to investigate a situation to find how it came about is important. Moreover, in the troubleshooting process it is also important to know the next steps to take after finding the route cause. As we understand, good organization and inductive thinking are required to successfully resolve the error situation. I think this problem-solving process is the same for everyday life problems.
In my daily work duties, I use the troubleshooting technique to fix error code problems. Therefore, it is important to first of all understand why these errors occur and secondly to fix them by following some steps sequentially. The ability to solve problems is something that develops and expands within the work environment. It is not something that all people have maturely developed from the first day they start a new professional career.
In my opinion, based on the additional information you are giving me, I think you have no reason to worry about your problem-solving ability. It is vital to remember that every problem is a new lesson and a new experience gained.
