Anonymous asked a question to Rana M.
I graduated 6 months ago and been constantly applying to entry jobs within my area of study but never hear back. I have tailored my resume, reached out to hiring managers, and expanded my search but it seems the only get an entry level job is to already have an entry level job. Any advice?
Hey there Anonymous, it’s really good to connect with you. I’m sorry you’re going through such a challenging time in your job search—I can truly understand how difficult and frustrating this period can feel.
While my journey is a little different, I wanted to share it in case it helps. About four years into my own career after graduating, I found myself at a crossroads. I had studied and worked as an accountant, but I realised I had reached a wall. It simply wasn’t my passion. What truly energised me was the people-facing side of work, which led me to explore a move into recruitment.
Making that shift felt daunting and honestly quite scary, especially having no formal recruitment experience at the time. What helped was taking a step back and really looking at my experience and CV through a different lens. Instead of focusing on job titles, I focused on transferable skills—things like problem-solving, managing challenging stakeholders, communication, and strong time management. Those skills were just as valuable in recruitment as they had been in accounting.
What I’d encourage you to do is something similar: when applying for roles, make sure your CV is tailored and clearly highlights the skills and experiences that are relevant or transferable to the role you’re targeting. Networking can also be incredibly powerful—platforms like LinkedIn are great for building connections, learning about different career paths, and uncovering opportunities that aren’t always advertised.
Most importantly, try to remember this: you only need one yes. It may take time, but it will happen. Keep believing in your abilities and don’t underestimate the value you bring—you’re closer than you think.
I wish you all the best in your search, you got this!
