Working in the middle east as a woman of colour

Sanaa S. asked a question to Rana M.

Hi Rana, I’ve moved to Riyadh about a month ago and I’ve been on the job hunt. I’d like to know what it’s like, from your experience and perspective, what it’s really like to work in the middle east. I grew up and lived in Dubai 8yrs ago but it’s not quite the same as working. Thanks :)

    Hi Sanaa,

It’s a pleasure connecting with you on the Insider platform—and I really appreciated your thoughtful question. Dubai, like much of the Gulf region including Saudi Arabia, is constantly evolving, with innovation and transformation happening at a remarkable pace.

Having spent most of my life in Australia and the UAE, I’ve found that working in the Middle East offers a unique flavor. The diversity here is amazing —you collaborate with professionals from a wide range of cultures and nationalities, making it a true melting pot of ideas and perspectives.

Another exciting aspect is the opportunity to contribute to both local and global projects, as many international companies have established their regional hubs in this part of the world. I’d also emphasize the importance of networking—building strong personal and professional relationships is key to thriving in this environment.

Best of luck with your job search!

    Rana
