Jeffrey S. asked a question to Rana M.
I'm in the midst of a major career pivot in my life (engineering to arts). I have a year left before I do it. It's very daunting and I'm scared, but I know what to do. I just don't know if I have the courage to the take the leap because if I fail, I'll be stuck between two worlds, undesired by both.
Hi Jeffrey,
Thanks for connecting with me on Insider—and for such a thoughtful question. I can completely relate, because I couldn’t always see the other side either. When I moved from accounting to recruitment, and later from management consulting recruitment into telecom and tech at Nokia, it never felt perfectly clear or risk‑free.
What carried me through was trusting my transferable skills and my ability to learn. I focused less on the industry change and more on what I already did well—working with people, understanding business needs, and staying curious. I also leaned on conversations with others and asked lots of questions along the way. In the end, I didn’t wait for everything to make sense. I took the leap believing I’d figure things out as I went—and that confidence came from action, not certainty.
I hope this helps. Always follow what genuinely excites you—I’m rooting for you and your journey!
Best wishes,
Rana
Thank you, Rana. This is exactly what I needed to hear. Engineering to creative work feels like a big jump, which is probably why I've been overthinking it.
I'll be keeping in mind 'confidence came from action, not certainty.' I really appreciate your time and honesty.
Staying curious,
Jeffrey
